MISSION       ABOUT US       ACTION ALERTS        HALL OF SHAME      DOCUMENTARY      PEOPLE TO CONTACT

We are a group of architectural graduates, artists, designers and concerned citizens primarily located in San Diego that have assembled to focus on the processes that facilitate irresponsible development in communities. We understand and care about the paramount impact that the built environment has on our lives and we want to hold the individuals responsible for development to certain standards of aesthetic integrity.

The problem began with the introduction of production housing, that is, housing that is built without a user in mind, without adequate site analysis and most importantly without a trained designer, purely for profit. It has become known as hit and run architecture. The most famous example of this is known as the Huffman six pack. From the 1960s to the 1980s the Huffman family built almost 700 apartment units in San Diego. Plowing through quaint neighborhoods like Hillcrest, University Heights, NorthPark, City Heights etc, they maxed lots with massive out of scale and proportion boxes with few or no windows or doors facing the street, a row of parking right off the sidewalk, and inward facing units that destroy the public vistas. It doesn't take a design expert to realize that these are more than just eyesores, they facilitate apathy, crime and a general disconnect with the neighborhood.

As the housing boom re-emerged in the new millenium the problem re-emerged as well except now the developers have become even more strategic and unscruptulous. Often preying upon elderly citizens with opportunistic zoning they swoop in and buy these homes; they do not notify the citizens in the neighborhood properly about demolition. They may even inform the citizens that they are simply remodeling until one day they entire house is leveled and there is nothing that can be done.

We have seen enough and we are tired of being told there is nothing that can be done. We have rights and we are committed to keeping information flowing about this situation and providing resources to help the community stand up to these developers.
