WHO IS BEHIND THIS ATTACK ON PRESERVATION

The true story behind Craig Gustafson's "City is Generous with Tax Breaks for Old Homes," lies with the outrageous and alarming rate of demolition of houses and neighborhood shopping centers in the older pre- World War II parts of San Diego. Demolitions coincide where the development industry is pressing for higher density for high rise condominium/commercial buildings

Through the Technical Advisory Committee, the Building Industry Association controls the work plan, budget and processing of building demolitions by the Development Services Department. Kelly Broughton squirmed at questions posed by Councilwoman Toni Atkins at the Land Use & Housing Committee meeting of the City Council on Jan 23rd 2008, and responded by saying that he had to ask the Technical Advisory Committee if he could work on demolitions. Who are they?

The Development Services Technical Advisory Committee:

Mission Statement: The stated mission is: To proactively advise the mayor and the Land Use and Housing Committee on improvement to the regulatory process through the review of policies and regulations that impact development. And to advise on improvements to the development review process through communications, technology, and best business practices to reduce processing times and improve customer service. And to advocate for qualify development to meet the needs of all citizens of San Diego."

How many of these people have had major construction projects under review by Development Services Department in the past five years? Why are they setting the work plan, budget, and priorities of Kelly Broughton, Director of Development Services? How are they influencing the increased density in historically significant older neighborhoods in the General Plan at the Land Use & Housing Committee?
