SAVEDBYTHECOMMUNITY
Stop the destruction of valuable resources

House of Heirlooms, 801 University Avenuee

The Historical Resources Board meeting on January 25 received a huge turnout from members of the Hillcrest/Uni Heights/Mission Hills Community to save this rare Edwardian structure that has become a landmark to the community. I objected to the use of the word "Historian" to describe the lawyer of the developer pleaing that this building was not historic. Seems like a historian would have done her research. Bruce Coons from SOHO who is almost always the picture of composure in these often heated hearings, was so incensed by the report that in a beautiful and cathartic moment, announced "this is a pack of bold faced lies". I was secretly applauding...hell I I was giving him a standing ovation. Finally, someone was calling it what it really was. He was reprimanded by the volunteer Board for his lack of respect and use of language, however it seems to me that the reprimand should go to the HRB that wrote the shoddy report and the lawyer that wrote the report for the developer. Both reports were so disrespectful to the public. They claimed this building had virtually no historic value since it was built as a temporary structure and moved from its original location. It completely left out multiple historic qualities of the structure and rhetorically painted the building as a meaningless and disposable shack. This is a report from the HRB, the people whose salaries you pay to ensure the protection of our historical resources. And this is no anomaly. I have yet to see a hearing where the HRB report from the city does not favor the developer.

LETTER FROM BRUCE COONS

This wooden Edwardian commercial structure (one of the last and best of its type to survive in San Diego) is coming before the City of San Diego’s Historical Resources Board on this Thursday, January 25 at 1:00 pm, 12th Floor, 202 “C” Street, San Diego.

HRB staff is recommending against designation.

Originally constructed for St. Joseph’s Hospital, it was moved to the present location in 1927.

This building is virtually the definition of a “landmark,” as I don’t know any one who fails to notice it every time they pass by. The loss of such a significant structure would be felt strongly.

Please come and voice your support of designation of this important landmark, and email your letters of support to HRB Senior Planner Cathy Winterrowd at cwinterrowd@sandiego.gov.

Sincerely,

Bruce Coons
Executive Director
Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO)
